Summary:
|
Albemarle County Public Schools is looking to collaborate with the Virginia Institute by leasing two learning cottages at the Murray High School and the Community Public Charter School campus. Leasing two of the four learning cottages in the lower lot would provide 6 students already being served by VIA to transfer to this location during this school year. The VIA students are in middle and high school grades and working on Standards of Learning Curriculum. The program would be a stand alone / extension of the Virginia Institute for Autism. As such, instructional staff, management, communications would all be managed by VIA. Breakfast and lunch would be provided at Murray High by Albemarle Schools.
This project would expand the capacity of VIA to potentially serve additional student in our community. This lease is for three years and is considered a pilot project. The Virginia Department of Education has given its approval to the Virginia Institute of Autism after conducting an on site visit, tour and the submitted VIA license renewal to include this project.
It is expected that, should this Lease Agreement be approved, moving may begin as early as March 1 and students from VIA being services on site shortly after Spring Break in April of 2019. |

The improvements made to the two learning cottages are those that are considered to be those we would do should a new classroom and would be covered with local funds. The special education budget is working with Building Services to cover the estimated $7500 cost to improvements. |
